My name is Daniel Sandvik and I’m an amateur concert and portrait photographer from Stavanger, Norway. Although my main passion is photograph live music and people, I often explore other genres like landscape and wildlife photography.
I picked up photography again somewhere around summer 2016 when I bought a second hand Canon 600D (T3i) and a 50mm F1.8. I do have some knowledge in photography from my 3 years of Media & Communication and Media Design in Videregående (upper secondary high school / college in Norway), so I knew where to start.
It wasn’t until Norway Rock 2016 that I got the idea of shooting live music after watching a few music photographers in the photo pit taking photos of all the large bands like Within Temptation, Avatar, Five Finger Death Punch and so on. It was around that time I really thought to myself that I really wanted to try this out. After the festival I started doing some research on how the process was to shoot live music, and that’s when the passion for concert photography started.
Fast forward to around April 2017 I got the opportunity to photograph the concert of the band Blodsmak I was lucky to become friends with at Norway Rock. They announced a concert in Sandnes, which wasn’t a long travel for me. Their concert was in this extremely poor lit venue with limited space and next to no stage lights. This was probably the most challenging first concert to shoot with my crop sensor camera paired with a 50mm F1.8 and a 24-70mm F2.8, but I made it work. After this shoot was a slight success, I got the opportunity to shoot Blodsmak on several occasions, and also quite a few other bands as well going through 2017 and 2018.
In 2018 I was extremely happy to be given access to shoot a few bigger events like Rock The Boat (Oslo - Denmark), Rock Mot Mobbing (Gjøvik), Garasjefestivalen (Reinsvoll) and Sørveiv (Kristiansand) as a volunteer.
And that's a short intro on how I got into photography.
